This San Jose district is known for its historic downtown, dining and shopping. When planners laid out the area in 1860, they dug a channel that drained the namesake Willow Glen marsh and opened the area for farming. By 1880, plots of land were priced nearly ten times higher than similar land elsewhere in the valley. The area was briefly a city, but in 1936 it was annexed to San Jose, largely to access its sewer system. Willow Glen neighborhoods are almost exclusively custom or semi-custom homes in styles ranging from Victorian to mid-century Eichler. Many trails run through or terminate in the district. Downtown Willow Glen, centered on Lincoln Avenue, is a charming mix of small businesses and annual street festivals.
