Named after a majestic coastal redwood tree encountered by early Spanish explorers, Palo Alto was founded in 1894 by industrialist Leland Stanford as he established Stanford University in memory of his son. Today, the city is one of the most expensive in the United States. Known as the birthplace of Silicon Valley, it’s home to the headquarters of such major tech companies as Hewlett Packard (HP) and Space Systems/Loral. It’s also been the headquarters or founding location of Apple, Google, Facebook, Logitech, Tesla, Intuit, PayPal and more. Ford and Lockheed Martin both maintain major facilities here. Palo Alto is also filled with nature and culture, from the 3,436-acre Monte Bello Open Space preserve to the Cantor Arts Center.
